Description
Split is the largest city in Dalmatia, and the second largest city in Croatia. Every local in the town of Split, will tell you that Split is “The most beautiful city in the world and the surrounding area” but do not get into a discussion with them, for the thousand year old soul of this city will most certainly convince you! The story of Split began a full 17 centuries ago, where the roman emperor Diocletian decided to build his palace on the peninsula located to the roman town of Salona, where he could peacefully spend the remaining years of his life. It is during these 1700 years that the palace slowly became a city that, today, attracts many visitors with its rich and long traditions, magnificent history, natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Diocletian’s palace and the entire historical core of Split has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1979, and not only because of the exceptional state of preservation of the palace proper, because, in equal rights, the city and the palace together continue to thrive with life. In this structure all the layers of history are visible, from ancient Rome, to the medieval times through to today. Walking through this ancient town, allows you to travel through time, being able to walk into Peristil square and view medieval roman churches, Gothic palaces, renaissance portals on houses of noble families, baroque facades, to modern architecture that all mesh into a rich heritage.
Antic Salona
Salona, the ancient metropolis of the roman province of Dalmatia, located in the central part of the eastern Adriatic coast. Salona was the capital of the roman province, only to have been abandoned during a period human migration, where just east of the ruins of Salona, the medieval town of Solin began to develop. Six kilometres north of Split, in today’s city of Solin, the ancient ruins of Salona can be explored and viewed. The geographical placement of Salona was indeed advantageous, located in the centre of the eastern Adriatic coast, at the bottom of Kastela bay, and on the delta of the river Salon (today Jadro) along with excellent road infrastructure to the hinterlands, which all contributed to the unencumbered development of the city. The main attractions that you will find at this site are the Porta Cesarea, Amphitheater, the roman hot springs, the necropolis etc. The site is full of greenery, which makes it ideal for a walk and enjoying nature.
